The Different Exotic Animal Behavior

September 1, 2010 |12:46 | Animal News  By : Team X

The Different Exotic Animal Behavior: The old adage "you can clue an animal to water, but you can't make him choice" was definitely coined by somebody who knew nothing about affection-based animal teaching. If that anyone had known about, and had practical the principles of education animals based ahead affection and relationship-edifice strategies, the slogan most maybe would not even survive.

At National Zoo, red panda cub is born and agave plant flowers

July 6, 2010 |13:33 | Animal News | Zoo News  By : Team X

A red panda cub, the first in 15 years, has been born at the National Zoo. There are fewer than 2,500 red pandas left in the wild, but the endangered species is actively bred in zoos. Mom is 2-year-old Shama and has been very attentive to her cub so far.

The father is 3-year-old Tate, who came to the zoo just last year. Zoo officials have closed off the red panda section of Asia Trail for a while, but you might be able to catch a glimpse of the cub, born June 16, from the upper viewing area.

Another great sight at the zoo right now is the flowering agave plant, a species that blooms only once in its life, usually between 10 and 25 years of age, and then dies. The bright yellow flowers, pollinated by hummingbirds, can be found in the cactus garden near the small mammal house. It is currently in full bloom.

Tiger Taunter Blows His Settlement

Tiger Taunter Blows His Settlement

Kulbir Dhaliwal, who made headlines in December 2007 when a Siberian tiger mauled him and two others at The San Francisco Zoo, is in the news again--though this time with less felinity and more felony. Kulbir, now 24, was taken into custody under suspicion of felony possession of three grams of cocaine after police stopped Kulbir and two other men for driving the wrong way on a one-way street near the San Jose State University campus.

Was this error in judgment the result of lingering trauma, or just another bad decision in a series of mistakes made by a troubled young man? In September 2007, police pulled over Kulbir and a friend under suspicion of drunk driving. When officers attempted to proceed, Kulbir drunkenly lashed out and the officers had to forcibly restrain him.

Looking back on the tiger attack it becomes clearer that the only thing Paul is a victim of is his penchant for stupid decisions. After the zoo director told reporters that it was improbable the tiger escape on her own, investigators discovered several sticks and pine cones in her cage that could not have fallen naturally, in addition to a footprint at the top railing of her cage.

Bloodsicles and frozen grapes help zoomates keep cool

Bloodsicles and frozen grapes help zoomates keep cool

It's a record-breaking 103 degrees and Omar doesn't want to leave the shade. But after some coaxing from Head Zookeeper Sara King, the Austin Zoo tiger meanders over to the pool and gingerly lowers himself, hind legs first, into the cool water.

As of July 6, Austin has set 10 record highs in less than two weeks – which, according to Mark Murray's weather blog at KVUE.com, may be a record in its own right. So Austin Zoo has been taking extra precautions to keep many of their 350 animals cool during this sweltering summer.

Park chief slams tiger shooting criticism

May 30, 2009 |16:37 | Animal News  By : Team X

Park chief slams tiger shooting criticismA Zion wildlife park executive has hit back at public protests over the decision to shoot the white tiger that killed a keeper this week. Park staff killed Abu - one of only 120 white tigers left in the world - with a shotgun and a .308 rifle as he fatally mauled Dalu Mncube on Wednesday.

Yesterday, park operations manager Glen Holland said people were wrong to think that the death of white tigers might endanger the population of Bengal tigers. "I just cannot get over the public of New Zealand saying 'the poor tiger' - it really is just unbelievable," he said.

Ape escapes, then 'changes mind'

May 11, 2009 |14:04 | Animal News  By : Team X

Ape-escapes-then-changes-miKarta, a 27-year-old primate, cleared one fence and began piling up debris to scale a wall at Adelaide Zoo.  Visitors who witnessed the escape alerted staff, and the zoo was promptly evacuated and closed for the day.

But Karta spent less than 30 minutes on the loose before apparently thinking better of her escape attempt.  Zoo curator Peter Whitehead told reporters the ape seemed to realise she was in a place where she should not have been.

In the Jungle With the Gorilla Whisperer

May 5, 2009 |17:59 | Animal News  By : Team X

In the Jungle With the Gorilla WhispererWhen sneaking up on a silverback gorilla, you want to be quiet and carefulThat's a lesson I learned here in the jungle of the Central African Republic from Angelique Todd, who spends nearly every day of her life with a family of gorillas.

On one particular morning, we were just a few feet from a roughly 500-pound, six-foot-long wild animal, who was alternately daydreaming and nodding off.

"He's sleeping," said Todd. "[The silverback] is the dominant male. So the male gorillas develop this huge size. They're almost double the size of the females."

Happy the Hippo Is Moving to Milwaukee

April 29, 2009 |16:59 | Animal News  By : Team X

Happy, the National Zoo's solitary male Nile hippopotamus, is heading for the chillier climes of the Milwaukee County Zoo, officials said.  But no worries: His new digs there will include a pool, a sandy beach and two female hippos, Puddles and Patty.

Happy the Hippo Is Moving to Milwaukee

His new name is going to be "Happier," one zoo official here joked.  Happy, who is 27 and weighs about 7,000 pounds, has lived his whole life at the National Zoo but has to leave because the expansion of the zoo's elephant exhibit, now well under way, will be claiming his quarters.

He is expected to be moved this summer. The Milwaukee zoo, meanwhile, is beginning a roughly $10 million expansion of its hippopotamus exhibit, part of which will allow visitors to watch hippos swimming underwater.

Dead lion: zoo gets hate mail

March 20, 2009 |15:48 | Animal News  By : Team X

Dead lion zoo gets hate mail.

Abusive calls and hate mail are being directed at a NSW zoo that shot dead a lioness after it escaped from its enclosure. The hand-reared nine-year-old tawny African lioness Jamelia was shot dead by a zookeeper at Mogo Zoo on the NSW South Coast on Tuesday.

More than 30 visitors were locked in the administration and other buildings after Jamelia escaped from her enclosure and began moving towards a public area.  A marksman was instructed by zoo owner Sally Padey to put her down, a decision that has outraged some who have questioned why a tranquilliser wasn't used.

The zoo's business manager John Appleby said staff had received hundreds of negative emails and phone calls since the shooting.  "It's predominantly emails, but we've had people ring up and swear at the staff," Mr Appleby said.

Treasures of the wild

March 3, 2009 |16:35 | Animal News  By : Team X

Treasures of the wildAs a child I had always showed curiosity in animals of many kinds — dogs, lizards, buffalos, snakes, monkeys, fish, toads — the list was endless. It was a joy to be surrounded by them, keep some of them and dream about wild animals in the jungles far away.

As I grew up I had the opportunity to realise my childhood dreams. Visits to the Melghat tiger reserve in Maharastra, Periyar in Kerala, and Bharatpur in Rajasthan have made an ever lasting impression on my mind and left me in awe about the diversity of species.

The variety of species in these forests — tigers, wolves, elephants, serpent eagles, painted storks, caterpillars, luminous beetles, bag worms that walk, leaves that close upon touch and pitchers that trap in sects — was amazing.
