National Zoo unveils new fishing cat

Posted in : Zoo News

(added last year!)

A new jungle cat is getting comfy in his new digs at the National Zoo. Lek, a one-year-old fishing cat, is now on display in Asia Trail exhibit at the zoo. He is expected to soon breed with Electra, the zoo's six-year-old female fishing cat. National Zoo officials call the cats unique because of the way they hunt. The cats swim and dive for fish - as their name suggests - and scoop out their prey with their partially webbed paws. The cats actually tap the surface of the water, tricking fish into thinking the ripples are from an insect.

The cats, which are endangered, are being studied for their breeding habits. Only 38 fishing cats exist in the U.S., and zoo officials say only 30 of them are reproductively viable.
