The Mysore Zoo is all set to lead the way in implementation of the solid waste management system. A team of scientists of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, will visit the zoo on Tuesday to discuss the project to convert the animal waste into bio-gas.
"A biomethanation plant will be set up at the zoo that will process about 1.5 tonnes of cattle dung everyday. It would generate 80-90 metric cube of fuel which will be used for preparation of food for animals," Dr Sharad P Kale, scientist from BARC, told TOI.
At a meeting held with the chief secretary and BARC on Monday, the authorities discussed implementation of over 400 such bio-gas plants across the state to process municipal solid waste and convert it into power.
Mangalore is the only other place in the state to have a biomethanation plant. "It is at Urva Market in Mangalore. The wet vegetable waste generated in the market will be used to produce bio-gas. The process of converting it into electricity is still on," said Dr Kale.
