Zoo Atlanta's baby orangutan making appearances

Posted in : Zoo News

(added last year!)

Zoo Atlanta's infant orangutan is starting to explore his outdoor habitat. Remy, a 4-month-old Sumatran orangutan, came to Atlanta from the Fort Worth Zoo recently to be fostered by another female after his mother became ill and unable to care for him. The infant and his foster mother, Madu, were hidden from the public while they bonded and while Remy adapted to his new home.

Visitors can catch the pair in their outdoor exhibit on sunny days when the winds are low and temperatures are above 70. Zoo Atlanta houses the nation's largest collection of orangutans with 13. The animals are native to Indonesia. Experts predict they will go extinct in the next decade without conservation efforts.
