An Israeli zoo has donated five mandrill monkeys to the Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP) here, making it the first Indian zoo to have this species. The Tisch Family Zoological Gardens of Jerusalem donated three female and two male mandrills, known as the largest of all monkeys, to the TSZP, its Deputy Director Dr Manik Palit said today. The colourful mandrills, aged between eight and ten years, would be housed in an enclosure developed for gibbons, which the authorities had contemplated to bring from Assam but the plan could not be executed, Palit said.Mandrills are found only in a few parts of Africa and are big in size compared to baboons. Its nostrils and lips are red while its both sides striped blue and white. The new inmates will be displayed for public only after they acclimatize with the local conditions.
