Special Features Pertaining to Whales
Breaching (Propulsion:
Despite its massive bulk weight of up to about 10 tons, the Killer Whale can gain enough speed to leap clear of water surface. This leap followed by a huge splash as it crashes back into water is known as ‘Breaching’. The Northern Right Whale breaches up to ten times; the Gray whale breaches two or three times in a row. The younger Blue Whales breach at an angle of 45 degrees, landing on their bellies.
Spyhoping :
Spyhoping means raising the head vertically out of water. The Killer Whale rises slowly out of water raising its head and most of its flippers above the surface of water , before sinking out of sight. The Gray whale spyhops for around 30 seconds with its head emerging by 6 to 9 feet. But in shallow lagoons it simply rests its flukes on the sea-bed.
