Tough economic times can mean cut backs at home. Pet care is often an area that gets cut. But, there are some things you can do to keep your pet healthy without spending a fortune."Regular checkups help us identify problems before they become out of hand," said Dr. James Rademaker.

Dr. Rademaker, a veterinarian with Eagle Creek Animal Clinic said to try not to cut out the annual checkup for your pet. Prevention he said can save you a lot of money in the long run. Dr. Rademaker said, "There are some low cost vaccine clinics available. And while they may not get the same physical exam and attention that they may get at their normal veterinarian, as a last resort it's a great way to get something done for their pet."

Dr. Rademaker said preventing pet problems goes beyond an annual exam. It can be a part of everyday life."Brushing their teeth is one big one. Exercise is a big one. Weight and obesity in our pets is a big issue and something we want to work with as owners," said Dr. Rademaker.

For those that are looking for a veterinarian, Angie Hicks of Angie's List said let your pet help you decide.
When you're picking a vet it's important it’s a vet your pet is comfortable with. So when you're selecting one, visit the vet, see how comfortable your pet is, how they interact with the staff there,

Because if they are more comfortable it's going to be easier to treat them," said Angie.Dr. Rademaker said the simplest thing you can do to help keep health care costs down is to watch the pet's weight."Keeping them at an appropriate weight really does help them as they get older to move around. It decreases the chance of obesity. In our feline patients it really can help decrease the chance of developing diabetes as well," said Dr. Rademaker.

Angie said when it comes to pets plan ahead. The worst time to look for a vet is when you really need one. And get care right away. Angie said if you try to "wait out an illness" you'll likely end up with a very sick pet and a larger medical bill.
