Mei Xiang The Panda Is Not Pregnant

Posted in : Zoo News

(added few years ago!)

Officials with the National Zoo are disappointed to announce that there will not be any baby pandas running around anytime soon. Rumors had been circulating that Mei Xiang, the zoo’s female Giant Panda was pregnant, but tests reveal this not to be the case afterall.

False pregnancies are not that common with pandas, however this is the 5th one that this specific panda has experienced. Earlier in May, officials had noted a change in the behavior of the panda, thus they thought she might be preggers. Zoo officials had artificially inseminated Mei Xiang back in January, in the hopes to produce baby pandas. We say, better luck next time.
