The first Sumatran rhinoceros was moved from the Los Angeles Zoo to Indonesia to take part in a breeding program for the critically endangered species, officials said. The male rhino named Andalas is to mate with two female rhinos at the Rhino Sanctuary located in the Way Kambas National Park, on the Island of Sumatra.
Andalas was born at the ‘Cincinnati Zoo - botanical garden’ in September 2001, becoming the first Sumatran rhino born in captivity over a century.
It is believed that less than 300 Sumatran rhinos exist today. Approximately 70 percent of the Sumatran rhino population has been lost since 1985, mainly due to the poachers that had been catching game illegally, and because of the loss of its tropical habitat in Malaysia and Indonesia.
