PORTLAND - The tainted pet food killed animals across the country – the breaking news read. Portland-based Banfield, The Pet Hospital, now estimates that three out of every 10,000 pets that ate the food developed kidney failure. With 60 million dogs and 70 million cats in the United States, Banfield believes that as many as 39,000 were sickened or killed by the food.
The Food and Drug Administration says the food contained wheat gluten tainted with melamine, a chemical used to make plastics.
The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association is complying a list of all recalled pet foods related to the wheat gluten contamination.
Some of the popular ‘U.S. Pet Food Recalls’ with their respective products related to the Menu Foods case have come to the attention of authorities. The OVMA encourages all pet-owners to contact the manufacturer regarding the status of any particular pet food or treat.
